The City of Mountain View is located on the northwestern edge of Santa Clara County and is a quintessentially Silicon Valley community. Home to more than three dozen significant high-tech companies, including 23andMe, Coupons.com, Intuit, Google, Mozilla, Quora, Symantec, and WhatsApp, Mountain View was home to the very first company to create silicon semiconductors — Shockley Semiconductor Laboratory, in 1956.
Mountain View has a population of just under 80,000 residents, but grew out of the Mexican land grant of Rancho Pastoria de las Borregas. This eventually fell into the hands of early settler Martin Murphy, Jr., who ended up with just under 5,000 acres in the area. Murphy ultimately divided his land among his heirs in parcels of approximately 800 acres each. What became the actual city of Mountain view grew up around a stage coach stop between the San Francisco and San Jose. The city itself was incorporated in 1902 and remained largely agricultural until after World War II.
The city itself is a gorgeous mix of high tech offices and light industrial developments, residential neighborhoods, restaurants, shops, galleries and cultural amenities, as well as parks and recreational facilities. World-class restaurants – including Michelin-rated Chez TJ — line the pedestrian-friendly blocks along Castro Street to the intersection of El Camino Real. Light rail links the city to other Silicon Valley destinations.
